The New York Knicks’ determined pursuit of a trade for four-time All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns during the offseason now seems more understandable.
Knicks center Mitchell Robinson, who has been dealing with recurring injuries, is currently recovering from two ankle surgeries. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, speaking on “First Take” with Stephen A. Smith, Robinson is expected to be sidelined for the rest of 2024, aiming for a return sometime in January. Earlier reports had suggested he might be back as early as December.
Charania explained, “The Knicks needed a center, mainly because of Mitchell Robinson’s status. Stephen, I hate to break the news, but I’ve been told he’ll be out for the remainder of this year, 2024, and he’ll make his season debut in January. Given his two ankle surgeries last season, it’s crucial for both the Knicks and Robinson that he comes back in top condition.”
He added, “The Knicks are optimistic about his return. Tom Thibodeau is a big fan of Robinson’s defensive skills, Stephen. Pairing him at center with Karl-Anthony Towns at power forward is something to watch for this season.”
