Nuggets Expected to Move On From $180M Nikola Jokic Teammate
The Denver Nuggets fell short in their playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, a disappointment given the expectations placed on a roster filled with talent. Despite the loss, the team showed more fight than some other playoff squads, though not everyone performed up to standard.
One major letdown was Michael Porter Jr., who had a rough postseason. Battling a shoulder injury, Porter made minimal impact, recording just one game with more than two made three-pointers. His inconsistency has long divided the Nuggets fanbase, and his recent struggles added fuel to the fire.
What’s Porter Jr.’s Trade Value?
Bill Simmons of The Ringer cast doubt on Porter’s market appeal, suggesting the Nuggets might struggle to find a willing trade partner. When asked what Denver could expect in return, Simmons sarcastically replied “Bradley Beal,” before clarifying the comparison was a joke. He likened trading Porter to shopping at a run-down grocery store—you’re not getting premium value.
Others echoed the criticism. Though Porter, 26, averaged a respectable 18.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and shot 39.5% from beyond the arc during the regular season, his hefty $180 million contract is viewed as a red flag for teams under the new collective bargaining agreement.
Why Would Teams Take That Contract?
His postseason slump was concerning, and commentator Shannon Sharpe argued that Porter should have been benched due to his ineffectiveness. Sharpe highlighted Jokic’s lack of shot attempts and noted Porter was the most disappointing player in the series, saying, “If you can’t give us more than that, you need to sit down.”
Porter Admits He Wasn’t Himself
Following Denver’s blowout Game 7 loss to the Thunder (125-93), Porter opened up about his own disappointment. He admitted feeling helpless on the court, unable to rebound or shoot as he normally would due to his injury.
“I’m really devastated personally,” Porter said. “I just couldn’t play the way I wanted to.”
With his performance falling short and trade rumors swirling, that loss may have marked his final appearance in a Nuggets uniform.
