Mixed News for Oilers Regarding Mattias Ekholm
The Edmonton Oilers received both encouraging and disappointing updates on defenseman Mattias Ekholm. While he is expected to miss the entire second-round playoff series against the Vegas Golden Knights, there is still hope he could return if the team advances.
Sports 1440’s Jason Gregor confirmed Ekholm’s absence after speaking with the 34-year-old Swede directly. It’s a tough situation for the veteran, who is missing his first-ever playoff game. “It’s very hard to watch. You get so nervous,” Ekholm admitted.
The injury, reportedly a significant lower-body issue first mentioned by Ryan Rishaug on April 12, initially raised fears that Ekholm’s season might be over. Head coach Kris Knoblauch recently confirmed that his return isn’t close, stating, “I think it’s still going to be a little longer.”
Oilers Adapting Without Ekholm
Despite missing one of their top defensemen, the Oilers have adapted well. Ekholm, who averaged over 22 minutes per game and tallied 33 points in 64 regular-season contests, remains a vital part of Edmonton’s defense. His experience, puck movement, and calm presence are noticeably absent. When he returns, integrating him into a lineup where everyone is currently contributing will be a welcome challenge.
There is reason for optimism, as reports indicate Ekholm is responding well to treatment. If the Oilers move past Vegas, he may be available to rejoin the team later in the postseason.
