“On the radar” – Portsmouth launch unexpected move for £2.5m-rated West Brom star following collapsed Derby County deal…

Portsmouth have made a surprise move to sign West Bromwich Albion playmaker John Swift, who has attracted interest from multiple Championship clubs and teams abroad.

Swift is set to depart West Brom when his contract expires on June 30, with the club opting not to offer him a new deal. The 29-year-old, one of the club’s top earners, was signed on a free transfer from Reading three years ago. However, his recent performances fell short of expectations, influencing the decision not to renew.

The call to release Swift — along with Grady Diangana and Semi Ajayi — was revealed early by former manager Tony Mowbray, even before official announcements were made. Of the trio, Swift is arguably viewed as having contributed the least in his final season.

Despite that, Portsmouth are confident they can help the creative midfielder rediscover his best form and have begun formal talks to bring him back to Fratton Park. According to *The News, Portsmouth*, Swift is open to returning to the club where he began his youth career before moving to Chelsea at the age of 10.

Negotiations are underway, and Swift is reportedly willing to take a substantial pay cut to facilitate the move. However, Pompey face stiff competition, with four other Championship clubs reportedly pursuing the Gosport native, alongside teams from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the MLS.

Still, Portsmouth holds a special place in Swift’s heart. Born in Forton, with family still residing nearby, the move represents a sentimental homecoming. Additionally, Pompey’s project in the Championship — having finished 16th in their comeback season — offers a promising foundation for growth.

Should the deal materialize, Swift would work under popular manager John Mousinho, who has resisted interest from other clubs to stay on. Swift is expected to feature in his natural attacking midfield role (No. 10) but could also be deployed as an inverted winger if needed.

Derby County, who nearly secured Swift’s signature on January’s transfer deadline day, are likely to be disappointed. The Rams were close to sealing a deal before talks collapsed at the last moment.

Swift leaves West Brom with a record of 19 goals and 12 assists in 126 games — his second-longest club stint after Reading, where he contributed 34 goals and 37 assists in 202 matches. His previous clubs also include Chelsea, Brentford, and Swindon Town.
