Al Horford Linked to Nuggets as Celtics Tenure Nears End
Veteran Boston Celtics big man Al Horford may be exploring a future outside of Boston, with the Denver Nuggets emerging as a possible new destination amid speculation surrounding the Celtics’ offseason roster shake-up.
With Boston expected to make significant lineup adjustments this summer, Horford, a seasoned 18-year NBA player, is reportedly attracting attention from several teams around the league following the expiration of his two-year, $19.5 million contract.
Although the New York Knicks are currently viewed as a leading candidate for Horford’s next team, The Athletic’s Jay King also mentioned the Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers as teams that could benefit from his experience and skill set.
“At this stage of his career, would Horford consider chasing another championship with a different team? If so, he’d be a strong addition to contenders like the Nuggets and Pacers,” King wrote. “However, Horford has enjoyed his time in Boston and has five children, which may factor into his decision. His last move away from the Celtics, to Philadelphia, didn’t work out well, as poor usage there led many to believe he was past his prime.”
Denver appears to be an especially strategic fit. With DeAndre Jordan currently backing up star center Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets could use a more dependable and versatile option off the bench. Horford’s leadership and experience would be a valuable asset in Denver’s frontcourt rotation.
This past season, Horford played in 60 regular-season games (starting 42), averaging 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. He maintained a solid presence in the playoffs as well, contributing 8.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
A five-time NBA All-Star and part of the 2024 championship-winning Celtics squad, Horford has previously played for the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, and Oklahoma City Thunder.
