Russell Westbrook Makes Key Career Announcement

Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook recently took to Instagram to share a significant update about his basketball future.

After being signed by the Nuggets last offseason, the former NBA MVP exceeded expectations, injecting new energy into the team. At 36 years old, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.4 steals per game—an impressive comeback following a few lackluster seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers. Denver may have had doubts about what he could offer, but Westbrook clearly rejuvenated his career during his first season with the team.

Westbrook joined the Nuggets on a two-year contract worth $6.7 million, which includes a player option for the 2025–26 season. While he has the option to test free agency, there has also been speculation that he might consider retirement due to his age.

Nonetheless, Westbrook put those rumors to rest with a recent Instagram post, affirming his intention to continue playing.

From Westbrook’s post:
“I am a Force of Nature.
Seventeen in the 📕.
Thankful and Grateful for the continued journey.
Eighteen on the way.
– The Brodie”

A nine-time All-Star, former MVP, two-time scoring leader, and three-time assist champion, Westbrook is widely regarded as a future Hall of Famer. Despite all his accolades, an NBA championship still eludes him, with just one Finals appearance across 17 seasons.

While he may explore free agency in pursuit of a title with another team, it appears that Denver has become a fitting place for him at this stage of his career.
