Jonas Valančiūnas Reveals First Conversation With Nikola Jokić After Nuggets Signing

In what could be the beginning of a dynamic frontcourt partnership, newly signed Denver Nuggets center Jonas Valančiūnas has opened up about his first conversation with Nikola Jokić, offering fans a glimpse into what might be an exciting chapter in Nuggets basketball.

Speaking during his introductory media session, Valančiūnas shared that the reigning MVP and franchise cornerstone, Jokić, reached out almost immediately after the signing was announced. “It was a warm welcome,” said the 33-year-old Lithuanian big man. “Nikola sent me a message saying, ‘Let’s go win something special together.’ That meant a lot coming from him.”

Valančiūnas, a 12-year NBA veteran, signed with the Nuggets this offseason in a move widely praised for its potential to strengthen the team’s depth, rebounding, and physical presence in the paint. Known for his toughness and rebounding prowess, Valančiūnas is expected to serve as both a complement and backup to Jokić, whose playmaking and all-around game have revolutionized the center position.

From Rivals to Teammates

Though they’ve often faced off on opposing sides in intense Western Conference matchups, Valančiūnas and Jokić have long shared mutual respect for one another. “He’s the most unique player I’ve ever played against,” Valančiūnas said of Jokić. “His vision, his touch—it’s not something you see every day. I’m excited to be on his side now.”

Jokić, who is coming off another historic season—including a 30-point, 20-rebound, 20-assist triple-double—reportedly advocated for the Valančiūnas signing behind closed doors. According to team insiders, the Serbian star valued Valančiūnas’ veteran experience, physical style of play, and willingness to embrace a role that fits within the team’s larger system.

A Fit for the New-Look Nuggets

With DeAndre Jordan retiring earlier this summer and Zeke Nnaji facing a contract dispute, the Nuggets were in need of a seasoned big man who could support Jokić, especially during long playoff stretches. Valančiūnas, who averaged 11.4 points and 9.8 rebounds last season with the New Orleans Pelicans, appears to be the perfect fit.

“I’m not coming in to be the star,” Valančiūnas clarified. “This is Nikola’s team, and I’m here to do my job—defend, rebound, set screens, and finish when needed.”

Head coach David Adelman, now in his first full year as the Nuggets’ permanent head coach, expressed optimism about the pairing. “Jonas brings a level of professionalism and grit that you need to win in this league,” Adelman said. “And with Nikola mentoring and working beside him, I think we’ll see both guys elevate their games.”

Looking Ahead

While the NBA season is still weeks away, early signs point to a smooth transition for Valančiūnas. His camaraderie with Jokić, even in the early stages, could spell success for a Denver team hoping to reclaim the championship glory they last tasted in 2023.

As Valančiūnas put it: “I’m ready. Ready to work, ready to win, and ready to follow Nikola’s lead. This team has the tools. Now it’s time to use them.”

Denver Nuggets fans will get their first real look at the new pairing during the upcoming preseason, with Valančiūnas expected to feature prominently in the rotation. One thing is clear: if this first conversation was any indication, the Jokić–Valančiūnas connection may be the under-the-radar storyline to watch this season.
