Saints Rookie Tyler Shough Inks Contract, Likely to Take QB1 Role

July 21 – Quarterback Tyler Shough officially signed his rookie contract with the New Orleans Saints on Monday, bringing him closer to becoming the team’s new starting signal-caller.

According to Spotrac, the deal spans four years and is fully guaranteed at $10.8 million. The Saints picked Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting him 40th overall. Just two weeks after the draft, veteran quarterback Derek Carr announced his retirement due to injury.

Although head coach Kellen Moore has not named a starter, Shough is widely expected to lead the offense in 2025.

Now 25, Shough wrapped up his college career at Louisville, where he led the team to a 9-4 season. He threw for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions in his final year. Before transferring to Louisville, he also played at Oregon and Texas Tech, accumulating 7,820 passing yards, 59 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions across 42 collegiate games.

The Saints’ quarterback room also includes 24-year-old Spencer Rattler, a 2024 fifth-round pick from South Carolina. Rattler struggled during his rookie year, posting an 0-6 record as a starter with a 57% completion rate, 1,317 passing yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Another returning QB, Jake Haener, recently missed several offseason practices due to an oblique injury. Last season, he appeared in eight games (one start), completing 18 of 39 passes for 226 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.
