Report: Nuggets Sign Guard Reece Beekman

According to The Denver Post, the Denver Nuggets have signed guard Reece Beekman to an Exhibit 10 contract.

Beekman, who played four years of college basketball at Virginia, was not selected in the 2024 NBA Draft. He initially joined the Golden State Warriors on a two-way contract, appearing briefly in two games for a total of four minutes.

In December, Beekman was traded to the Brooklyn Nets as part of the deal that sent Dennis Schroder to Golden State. With Brooklyn, he played in 34 games, averaging 2.7 points, 1.8 assists, and 0.9 steals in 13.7 minutes per contest.

Now 23, Beekman will aim to earn a spot on Denver’s roster. The Nuggets, who ranked fourth-worst in bench scoring last season, could be looking to strengthen their backcourt, especially with veteran Russell Westbrook potentially leaving in free agency.

Coaching Staff Update: Nuggets Eyeing J.J. Barea

NBA insider Marc Stein has reported that the Nuggets are considering bringing in former NBA guard J.J. Barea—who once played alongside Luka Doncic—as a member of head coach David Adelman’s staff.

Barea, a veteran presence during Doncic’s early NBA years from 2018 to 2020 with the Dallas Mavericks, has since built coaching experience as a head coach in Puerto Rico’s top professional league, the Baloncesto Superior Nacional.

Stein noted, “The Nuggets, I’m told, have also shown strong interest in ex-Mavericks guard J.J. Barea for a spot on Adelman’s staff.”

Bringing Barea on board could enhance Denver’s ability to connect with and develop international players, leveraging his overseas coaching experience and NBA background.

Looking Ahead: Denver’s Offseason Plans

The Nuggets concluded the 2024–25 season with a 50–32 record and advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals, defeating the Los Angeles Clippers in a seven-game series before falling to the eventual champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder—again in seven games.

This marks the second straight year Denver exited in the second round, following their 2023 championship. The team has struggled to replicate that deep playoff run due to the departure of several key players from that title-winning squad.

This offseason, the Nuggets face important decisions, including the potential free agency of Russell Westbrook, DeAndre Jordan, and Vlatko Cancar. Westbrook holds a player option that could influence Denver’s strategy.

With Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray still leading the team, the Nuggets aim to rebuild their depth and retool their roster in hopes of making another push for the championship.
