Red Wings Acquire John Gibson from Ducks for Petr Mrázek and Draft Picks
The Detroit Red Wings have acquired veteran goaltender John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks in a trade that sends Petr Mrázek, a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft, and a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft to Anaheim.
Gibson, 31, appeared in 29 games for the Ducks during the 2024-25 season, posting an 11-11-2 record with a 2.77 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage. He achieved two major career milestones this season, earning his 200th NHL win on January 5 against Tampa Bay (36 saves on 37 shots) and reaching his 500th career game on February 4 versus Dallas (26 saves on 27 shots). Since debuting with Anaheim in the 2013-14 season, the 6-foot-2, 214-pound netminder has compiled a 204-217-63 record, a 2.89 GAA, a .910 save percentage, and 24 shutouts in 506 games.
In postseason play, Gibson holds an 11-13 record with a 2.80 GAA, a .912 save percentage, and one shutout over 26 playoff appearances, contributing to Anaheim’s run to the 2017 Western Conference Final. He also played 70 games in the AHL with the Norfolk Admirals and San Diego Gulls from 2012 to 2016, tallying a 34-24-7 record, a 2.38 GAA, a .921 save percentage, and seven shutouts.
Drafted by Anaheim in the second round (39th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Gibson leaves the Ducks as one of their most decorated goaltenders. He ranks first in franchise history in games played (506), saves (14,034), shots faced (15,420), and minutes (28,803:29), while ranking second in wins (204) and third in shutouts (24). In the playoffs, he is among the franchise leaders in games (T-3rd), wins (4th), saves (4th), shots faced (4th), and minutes (4th). He was a three-time NHL All-Star (2016, 2019, 2022), named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2015-16, and co-winner of the 2015-16 William M. Jennings Trophy, awarded to the goalie(s) with the fewest goals allowed.
Before going pro, Gibson spent two seasons with the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers, where he posted a 38-19-1 record, a 2.60 GAA, a .928 save percentage, and two shutouts across 59 games. He was named to the OHL’s Third All-Star Team in 2011-12 and Second All-Star Team in 2012-13. The Pittsburgh native also played for the U.S. National Team Development Program from 2009-2011.
Internationally, Gibson represented Team North America in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey under current Red Wings Head Coach Todd McLellan, finishing with a 1-0 record, a 2.09 GAA, and a .932 save percentage. He was a standout for Team USA at the 2013 IIHF World Championship with a 4-1 record, 1.56 GAA, .951 save percentage, and a shutout. He also starred in back-to-back IIHF World Junior Championships in 2012 and 2013, leading the U.S. to a gold medal in 2013 while earning MVP honors with a 5-2 record, 1.36 GAA, .955 save percentage, and one shutout. In 2011, he also led Team USA to a gold medal at the IIHF U18 World Championship, going 6-0 with a 2.34 GAA, .926 save percentage, and winning Best Goaltender honors.
