Doc Rivers Responds to Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Speculation

The Milwaukee Bucks are heading into a pivotal offseason, with much of the attention focused on their star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo. Speculation about his future with the team has been swirling, especially after ESPN’s Shams Charania reported over a month ago that the two-time MVP was “open-minded” about a potential trade. Despite that, no concrete developments have occurred, and Antetokounmpo has consistently expressed a desire to remain in Milwaukee.

Bucks head coach Doc Rivers recently pushed back against the trade rumors during an appearance on the Bill Simmons Podcast, saying he’s baffled by the reports. “It’s just ridiculous — and not true,” Rivers said. “I don’t know how many times Giannis has to say he wants to win a championship with the Bucks. This is one of the best windows to do it, especially with no dominant team right now.”

While Antetokounmpo’s competitive drive remains focused on winning titles, the Bucks haven’t reached the NBA Finals since their 2021 championship and have been eliminated in the first round for the past three seasons. Their current lack of salary cap flexibility and limited trade assets makes significant roster upgrades difficult. Still, Giannis hasn’t shown any signs of distancing himself from the organization, remaining publicly committed to the only NBA team he has ever played for.

As the offseason intensifies, there’s always a chance circumstances could shift. However, for now, Antetokounmpo seems content staying in Milwaukee. Coach Rivers, who signed a four-year, $40 million contract in January 2024 following the dismissal of Adrian Griffin, is set to remain with the team through the 2026–27 season. Meanwhile, Antetokounmpo is under contract for at least three more years, with a player option in 2027–28, when he’ll be 33 years old.
