Ken Rosenthal Shares Key Insight on Kyle Tucker’s Role in Cubs’ Future
Renowned MLB analyst Ken Rosenthal has made a striking observation about the trajectory of the Chicago Cubs, suggesting that their long-term success hinges significantly on the presence — or absence — of star outfielder Kyle Tucker.
The Cubs have been one of the most exciting teams in Major League Baseball this season. With a strong record of 40 wins and 25 losses, they currently sit atop the National League Central, holding a comfortable four-game lead. A major contributor to their success has been the stellar performance of Kyle Tucker, who is hitting .278 with 67 hits, 12 home runs, and 40 RBIs so far this season.
Despite his impact, Tucker’s future with the team remains uncertain as he plays under the looming pressure of a potential multi-million-dollar contract extension. If he continues to perform at this level, many expect the Cubs to make a serious push to retain him.
Speaking on MLB Network, Rosenthal acknowledged the critical role Tucker plays in the team’s current success and argued that keeping him should be a top priority for the Cubs’ front office.
“Kyle Tucker has truly changed the makeup of this team,” Rosenthal said. “Patrick Mooney covered this well in The Athletic recently. There’s a unique presence Tucker brings. He’s one of the elite players in the league. Without him, the Cubs would not be in the position they’re in — even if Pete Crow-Armstrong (PCA) had played the same way last year, it wouldn’t be the same. Tucker has been a game-changer. Whether or not he stays will ultimately be a decision for ownership. If the Cubs choose not to re-sign him, Jed Hoyer will have to start reshaping the team all over again.”
Rosenthal did acknowledge that Crow-Armstrong has blossomed into a potential MVP candidate and that the Cubs have benefited from strong performances by other key players. Veteran outfielder Ian Happ, for instance, continues to be a reliable contributor to the lineup. However, Tucker brings a rare combination of power, consistency, and veteran presence that elevates the team’s competitiveness to another level.
“In my view, the future of the Cubs beyond this season is largely dependent on whether Tucker remains with the club — or if they’re able to acquire someone of similar caliber,” Rosenthal added. “Without him, they could find themselves starting over.”
Tucker’s influence extends beyond statistics. His leadership and on-field presence have energized both the clubhouse and the fanbase. While the Cubs possess promising talent, re-signing Tucker may be the key to sustaining their current momentum and building a true championship contender.
