Novak Djokovic Dismisses Misconceptions About Nikola Jokic

During the French Open on Sunday, Novak Djokovic addressed and debunked a widely held misconception about NBA star Nikola Jokic.

Serbia has produced major global sports figures in recent years, with tennis legend Novak Djokovic and Denver Nuggets MVP Nikola Jokic standing out in their respective fields. The two Serbian athletes have built a strong friendship over time, often catching up during Djokovic’s visits to the U.S. for ATP Tour events in the spring and fall.

Though they’re not currently together—Djokovic is in Paris aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title—he didn’t hesitate to defend Jokic during a press interaction on his day off before the fourth round, according to HoopsHype.

“Basketball is the most popular sport in our country,” Djokovic said. “Jokic is absolutely incredible—not just in terms of his performance, but also how he handles his personal life. Early on, people believed he was being fake, thinking he only cared about his family and horses. But honestly, that’s exactly who he is, and I truly admire that.”

Djokovic also commented on the ongoing debate about whether Jokic should represent Serbia internationally, particularly after enduring a demanding NBA season.

“The NBA season really drains him,” Djokovic noted. “Every year there’s some kind of international competition—the European Championship, the World Cup, or the Olympics—and people always wonder if he’ll suit up for the national team. There’s a lot of emotion and expectation from fans who want top players representing Serbia. It’s a heavy burden. But I understand him, and what he’s already given to Serbian basketball and to the sport in general is remarkable.”

Despite a packed NBA schedule, Jokic managed to help Serbia qualify for the Olympics and even secured a bronze medal, narrowly missing out on defeating Team USA in the semifinals. His contributions to Serbian basketball remain significant, despite the physical toll of his NBA commitments.

Meanwhile, Djokovic is currently competing in the fourth round of the French Open against Cam Norrie, seeking to add another major title to his record-breaking career.
