Adelman Charts New Course: Nuggets Embrace Strategic Shift Under New Head Coach

David Adelman, recently appointed as the Denver Nuggets’ full-time head coach, is set to implement significant changes in the team’s playing style and philosophy for the upcoming season. After serving as interim head coach following Michael Malone’s dismissal on April 8, Adelman led the Nuggets to a first-round playoff victory over the Clippers before a seven-game series loss to the Thunder in the second round.

Adelman emphasized the need for the team to improve its physical conditioning and plans to expand the player rotation beyond the patterns established by his predecessor. He advocates for a slower, more deliberate style of play to leverage the unique skills of star center Nikola Jokić. “We have to get back to being an execution-based team,” Adelman stated, highlighting the importance of efficiency and precision over pace, especially in high-stakes games.

The Nuggets face challenges in enhancing their roster, as they do not possess any picks in the upcoming draft. Significant trades would likely disrupt the current starting lineup, making internal development crucial. Young players like Julian Strawther, Peyton Watson, Jalen Pickett, and DaRon Holmes, who missed his rookie season due to injury, are expected to play more prominent roles.

Regarding roster adjustments, discussions suggest that Russell Westbrook may not align with Adelman’s envisioned slower pace and emphasis on shot-making. Westbrook holds a $3.47 million player option, and some analysts propose that he might be better suited to a team seeking a high-profile player. Alternatively, the Nuggets could consider acquiring a steadier backup point guard, such as free agent Tyus Jones, using the mid-level exception.

Team president Josh Kroenke has expressed a desire for improved cohesion between the head coach and general manager. While Adelman will have some input in selecting a new GM, Kroenke emphasized that the primary goal is to ensure a harmonious working relationship between the two roles. Interim GM Ben Tenzer has been commended for his performance since Calvin Booth’s departure.

Additionally, Adelman is expected to address conditioning and readiness with key players, notably Jamal Murray, whose four-year, $207.8 million extension begins next season. Ensuring that Murray enters the season in optimal shape is considered vital for the team’s success.
