The Heartbreaking Loss of Former NBA Player Drew Gordon

The story surrounding the loss of Aaron Gordon’s brother is truly tragic.

Aaron Gordon, a forward for the Denver Nuggets, recently endured a personal tragedy that left fans mourning with him—the untimely death of his older brother, Drew Gordon.

Drew, who also had a career in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers, passed away at just 33 years old. He was married to his wife, Angela, for five years, and the couple had three sons: Jayden, Brody, and Zayne. Drew tragically died in a car crash on May 30, 2024.

According to ESPN, Drew was killed in a car accident in Portland, Oregon, when his vehicle collided with a GMC Sierra in Clackamas County. He was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by People.

Following the news, the Denver Nuggets shared a statement on X (formerly Twitter), expressing their sorrow:

“1990 – 2024 Drew Gordon. The Denver Nuggets organization is devastated to learn about the tragic passing of Drew Gordon. Drew was far too young to leave this world, but his legacy will forever live on through his three beautiful children and all of his loved ones. Our hearts are with Aaron and the Gordon family during this extremely difficult time.”

Just months before his passing, Drew posted a heartfelt birthday tribute to his wife on Instagram, writing on February 18, 2024:

“Spent the day yesterday in the present and not posting on social media. But happy birthday, bubba (yesterday)!!! … The big 21 😂 Thank you for being you and putting up with my crazy!! You have been killing it and will continue to do so!! I love youuu!!! We will go out for your first drink now that you are finally of drinking age.”

Drew played college basketball for the UCLA Bruins before launching a professional career overseas. He was a standout player internationally, competing in various countries including Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, Turkey, France, Lithuania, and Poland. He also had stints in the NBA G League and officially retired from professional basketball in 2023.

Aaron Gordon reflected on his brother’s memory during a press conference on May 18, 2025, after the Nuggets were eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the Western Conference Semifinals. When asked what he was proud of this season, Aaron responded:

“Being able to compete for the first time without my brother by my side. I know he’s with me, and I know he’s staying with me. But, I think just being out here and competing is something.”

Aaron also pays tribute to Drew by wearing jersey #32—the same number worn by their father, Ed Gordon, during his time playing for San Diego State.

“It means he is with me,” Aaron added. “He has my back just like he has my front.”
