Rams Free Agent Pickup Facing Three-Game Suspension, per Report
The 2025 NFL season hasn’t even kicked off yet, and the San Francisco 49ers may already be dealing with roster setbacks. Newly signed wide receiver Demarcus Robinson, who joined the team on a two-year contract during free agency, is expected to be a major piece of the offense—especially with the team looking to fill the void left by Deebo Samuel.
However, Robinson may not be available right away. According to a May 8 report, he is facing a three-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. The suspension stems from a DUI arrest during his time with the Los Angeles Rams last November.
“I think it was a bad decision he made. I don’t think that makes him a bad person,” Rams head coach Sean McVay told ESPN at the time. “And I do believe that with his words, our guys can learn from this, and hopefully no one repeats such a mistake.”
What the Suspension Means for the 49ers
With Robinson likely out for the first three games, the team will have to lean more heavily on receivers like Ricky Pearsall, Jacob Cowing, and rookie Jordan Watkins. The wide receiver corps is undergoing a major shift—Deebo Samuel is gone, and Brandon Aiyuk may miss time recovering from a torn ACL. The 49ers are now racing to form a dependable receiving unit.
Still, the 49ers may be able to weather the early-season stretch. Alongside the aforementioned receivers, Jauan Jennings—who had a breakout year in 2024—is expected to lead the group and could continue to build on last season’s success.
Demarcus Robinson’s Journey in the NFL
Robinson played college football at Florida, recording 105 receptions for 1,353 yards and nine touchdowns. He was drafted in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs and spent six seasons there. Though never a full-time starter, he was an important contributor to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV championship team in 2019, tallying 32 catches for 449 yards and four touchdowns that season.
After playing every game in 2021, he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency but was released before the 2022 season began. He then joined the Baltimore Ravens, where he caught 48 passes for 458 yards and two touchdowns in one season. Robinson signed with the Rams in 2023, had a productive year, and was re-signed for another season in 2024 before joining the 49ers.
