Why Nikola Jokic Is Thriving Following Michael Malone’s Departure
Nikola Jokic appears to have hit another level since the Denver Nuggets parted ways with head coach Michael Malone shortly before the NBA playoffs.
The move shocked many around the league, but Jokic didn’t seem rattled. In fact, it seemed to ignite something in the Serbian superstar.
Under interim head coach David Adelman, Jokic has emerged as a more vocal leader. He’s been actively directing plays and taking charge on both ends of the floor.
Footage has surfaced showing Jokic frequently engaged on the sidelines, discussing strategy and play-calling—a noticeable shift in his demeanor. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, who spoke on The Pat McAfee Show, Jokic seems more at ease than ever.
“People in Denver are saying Nikola Jokic finally feels comfortable… He’s more vocal than we’ve ever seen him,” Charania noted.
This shift may point to a deeper issue with Malone’s coaching style. While known for his disciplined approach, it sometimes bordered on micromanagement, potentially stifling player creativity.
For a player of Jokic’s caliber—a former MVP and NBA champion—being restricted from making key decisions may have been limiting. With more freedom now, Jokic is clearly embracing the chance to lead and influence the game his way.
