Paul Finebaum Points Out Who’s Responsible for Alabama’s Upset Loss to Vanderbilt
In a shocking turn of events, the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide suffered a defeat to the Vanderbilt Commodores, a team they hadn’t lost to since 1984. This unexpected outcome ranks among the biggest upsets in college football history. For nearly 20 years, Alabama has dominated the sport, while Vanderbilt has struggled at the bottom of the SEC. Despite being favored by three scores, Alabama lost 40-35. A key factor in the defeat was their defense, which allowed Vanderbilt to rack up 418 total yards and convert 13 of 19 third and fourth downs, dominating possession.
On the “Paul Finebaum Show,” SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum placed the blame squarely on defensive coordinator Kane Wommack. Finebaum expressed strong criticism, saying Wommack could be one of the worst defensive coordinators he’s seen at a major college. “It was Kane Wommack’s fault,” Finebaum said.
Wommack came to Alabama after a successful stint at South Alabama, where he turned around a struggling program and led them to two winning seasons in three years, including a 10-win season. However, his performance at Alabama has been underwhelming so far. The Crimson Tide is currently ranked 50th in total defense, 61st in passing defense, 54th in rushing defense, and 41st in scoring defense. Last season, Alabama ranked significantly higher in these categories. If the team wants to return to championship form, Wommack and the defense will need to make significant improvements.
