The Pittsburgh Steelers have multiple options at quarterback, including potentially replacing Russell Wilson with a younger player to compete with or back up current starter Justin Fields.
Teams like the Las Vegas Raiders might be interested in Wilson, especially if he waives his no-trade clause. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler mentioned that Wilson’s low salary could be appealing, and the Raiders were once a preferred destination for him.
If the Steelers were to trade Wilson, who has yet to play a regular-season game and is making $1.2 million this year, it would show their commitment to Fields for the rest of the season. However, Fields has his own challenges and is in the final year of his rookie contract, set to become a free agent in March 2025 unless he signs an extension.
This opens the door for Pittsburgh to look for another quarterback before the November 5 trade deadline. One option could be Bryce Young of the Carolina Panthers. While ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Panthers might trade Young in the offseason, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggested that a strong offer could push Carolina to act sooner.
If Fields struggles, Young could become the next potential first-rounder the Steelers take a chance on. Young is currently in the second year of his four-year, $38 million rookie contract, which includes a team option for 2027.
